The earthquake was caused by the Pacific and North American plate creating friction by rubbing against each other and released as an earthquake, was a 7.8 magnitude on the Richter scale and one of the most destructive earthquakes known. The San Andreas Fault slipped 6 metres along 430 kilometres of its length.
